Scholarship Application

Scholarship Criteria

Piankatank Ruritan Club awards annual scholarships to graduating seniors of Mathews High School or Mathews County Home School program.  We offer three scholarships. Two scholarships will be awarded to students who have been accepted to either a four-year College/University or 2 year Community College and the third scholarship to a student who has been accepted to a Trade/Vocational School.

College/University Awards: $1500  for a 4 year University. $1000 for a 4 yr college or 2 year Community College Program and $600 for a trade school program.  Funds will be paid directly to the school at the beginning of the school year.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS   

Must define on their application which scholarship they are applying for.

Must be a 2022 graduating senior of Mathews High School or Home School Program in Mathews County.

Must be accepted by a college.

Grade point Average requirement:
3.0 GPA  for College/University applicants

Must have demonstrated community support by participating in extracurricular activities: Students must list these activities and explain their degree of participation and length service.

Community service.

Student must address need for scholarship funds including
expected family contribution figures.

Student must address their reason for the vocation that they are seeking.


Essay:  How will my college education help me better serve my community?

Must demonstrate good sentence structure, spelling and be at least 250 words.

Application must be filled out clearly and legibly.

High school transcript or home school record.

Two letters of recommendation.  No form letters!

A recommendation may be obtained from:

School official: counselor, principal, teacher (only one).

Community leader.

Letters from present or former supervisor.

Each person providing a recommendation MUST state their name and relationship to the applicant.

FILING DEADLINE:  Returned to the School Counselors Office by May 13th 2022.

The Piankatank Ruritan Club presented the remaining two of the club’s three college scholarships at its August dinner meeting. Both recipients are 2018 graduates of Mathews High School. Emma Johnson, at left, was given a $1,500 scholarship and will be attending Bridgewater College. The club’s $600 scholarship was given to Chloe Sanderson, right, who will be attending Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The two are shown with Club Secretary, Tim Roscher.
